Benefits of Red Light Therapy, Point #1: What “junk light” is, its negative side effects, and how red light therapy can help.Title Goes Here
Today, humans continue to break all of nature's laws in one big way: we live and work under junk light, AKA artificial light. Since the invention of the incandescent light bulb in 1879 by Thomas Edison, we now decide when to turn on and off lights versus relying on sunlight to determine our daily schedules. Why is this such a problem? Junk light has significant negative health impacts on our metabolism, our hormone production, our energy levels and the health of our entire body. Just looking at junk light can increase your risk for type-two diabetes, obesity, cancer and sleep disorders such as insomnia, just to name a few.
What can you do to help counter these negative effects? During this episode, Kyle and I dive into the topic of red light, AKA photobiomodulation. And this light red light allows your mitochondria and ATP energy production to work at 100 percent efficiency. Red light is also a big part of the light spectrum that's missing from our lives today.

Benefits of Red Light Therapy, Point #2: Some basics about UVB, vitamin D and red light.
With all the research and science available today, you can’t deny that the higher vitamin D level you have, the less susceptible you are to infectious disease and all chronic illness. Since we make vitamin D from sunlight, there’s no doubt that light plays a huge role in our biology and our biochemistry.
Vitamin D in particular is extremely important for your immune system and overall health. Meanwhile, we use UVB light to make vitamin B. As for what red light is, Kyle describes it to his kids using the colors of the rainbow. You essentially have blue on one side and red on the other side. And those colors are actually waves of energy. Blue, which is on one side, has a very short, energetic wave of energy. Red has a longer, less powerful energy. And then on the outside of those colors, we have things that we can't see with our eyes. One is UVA, which will give you a suntan and vitamin D. Then on the other side is something we can't perceive with our eyes, and that's infrared and closest to red. And if you can get close to the red and the near infrared, those are the two wavelengths that Kyle’s company provides in its lights. Because those red lights essentially charge the energy-making areas of our body, our cells. These lights can even sometimes allow you to bring those cells back if they've been damaged or to just make them work optimally.
Kyle often struggles to describe the benefits of red light therapy because they often sound too good to be true. However, he’s red light therapy to be especially effective at:
- Reducing the effects of aging on the skin
- Aiding muscle recovery from workouts or recovery from an injury
- Improving healing from blue light damage to the eyes.
One of the reasons that red light therapy can be so beneficial NOW is because LED lights are so common. As a result, we’re all being exposed to lights from only one side of the spectrum: blue. And while it is healthy for us to be exposed to blue light in the early parts of the day when we want to feel stimulated and awake, blue light is the last thing you need to be seeing at night.
Benefits of Red Light Therapy, Point #3: Tips for optimizing your exposure to red and blue light.
Kyle and I talk a lot about what people can do to optimize their exposure to red and blue lights, but one routine that has been especially helpful for his family is going out in the sun as soon as they wake up. When you walk outside and that sun pops up, even if it's not in the direct line of your eyes, it's still bright and that immediately releases cortisol and other hormones that will make you feel awake. So the sun - with its mix of red and blue light - is a great way to start your day.
As for how you can avoid blue lights from technology later in the day, Kyle also sells various blue-blocking glasses. His personal favorite is the orange Night Prowler, but I advise my sickest clients to try the red Frank the Tank glasses, which block even more blue rays. By wearing blue-blocking glasses, you can keep looking at your computer screen or other technology before bed without blue rays triggering the release of stress hormones that will keep you awake.
And, of course, you can also use various red light technology to ensure you’re getting plenty of red light exposure each day. Because even if we spend a lot of time out in the sun, it’s unlikely that we’re going to be walking around naked in January, right? Red light therapy allows you to get that beneficial red light exposure in the comfort of your own home. Plus, you can aim the red light at parts of your body that need it the most, like an ankle you injured. I especially appreciate that Kyle worked to ensure that his red light therapy products are low in EMFs (check out episode 13 of The Primal Pioneer if you don’t know why that’s a great thing!) and free of any flicker.
As for when to use red light therapy, Kyle uses it every day in the morning after sunrise for just 10 minutes total. He typically uses it after he showers and before he gets dressed, so it’s easy and convenient!
