Today, I want to talk about kombucha, a popular fermented fizzy drink that’s become very well known and is sold in most major grocery stores today. In episode 29 of the Primal Pioneer, I am sharing my insight and diving deeper into the health benefits of kombucha, as well as things to keep in mind when you are consuming this fermented beverage.

But before we dive right in, let me introduce myself in case this is your first visit. I am your host, Heathar Shepard and I am incredibly passionate about helping people JUST LIKE YOU find the health and happiness they truly deserve.

Besides being an alternative healer and integrative health coach, I’m also a Traumatic Brain Injury survivor who struggled for 10 years until I discovered the MOST important factor for overall health: the environment we live and work in. You’ll learn about the importance of sunlight, as well as the foods and eating cycles that heal the root causes of chronic disease. Kombucha Health Benefits, Point #1: One main thing to keep in mind when consuming kombucha is that it feeds Candida overgrowth.

Unlike the ancient practice of kombucha drinking where they brewed homemade fermented beverages that were consumed in great moderation, we go into the store and we buy those big bottles of kombucha and we drink a bottle or two. Some people contact me struggling with Candida overgrowth or yeast overgrowth and tell me they increased their kombucha consumption thinking this is the answer to overcoming things like Candida overgrowth. It’s well-intentioned but we are misinformed and misled when it comes to improving the health of our gut microbiome.

We do not particularly want to be drinking kombucha if we struggle with yeast or Candida overgrowth. We are drinking way too much of this beverage in general, whereas the ancients who grew their kombucha would drink a shot glass or two per day. This was also a seasonal beverage, where some times of the year drinking kombucha was more pronounced than other times of the year. We have to check ourselves when it comes to the kombucha we are drinking and how much. Even if you don't struggle with yeast or Candida overgrowth, you can create this situation if you drink too much kombucha or any fermented beverage.

Kombucha Health Benefits, Point #2: Just because you're eating something promoted as a health food or that contains beneficial bacteria doesn’t mean it’s going to act beneficially in your body.

When it comes to exploring how and why kombucha may be disrupting the health of your gut microbiome and overall health, we need to take a look at how kombucha is made. It’s very simple, it’s made by using a SCOBY. A SCOBY is also commonly referred to as a mushroom, this is a culture starter. You need this starter that is filled with different microbes to ignite the fermentation process. This is what allows the fermentation to occur in your kombucha probiotic drink. To make kombucha, all you need is the SCOBY, sugar, tea, and water. To turn your kombucha into a fermented drink, the SCOBY feeds off the sugar turning it into bacteria.

Those who brew kombucha correctly and mindfully will brew long enough where the sugar is mostly fermented out so you’re not left with a huge dose of sugar. I used to drink kombucha quite a lot several years ago, my gut health struggled. I was more inflamed, I got rashes on my elbows and knees. It was because I was getting too much yeast, as soon as I cut kombucha out, the rashes went away. I bring this up because I invite you to bring more attention to how you feel and what happens in your body when you add new food to your diet. Just because it’s promoted as a healthy food doesn’t mean our body will treat it that way.

Kombucha Health Benefits

Kombucha Health Benefits, Point #3: When it comes to understanding how your kombucha drinking may be impacting your health, first and foremost, the SCOBY is composed of yeast forming bacteria.

The primary bacteria found in the SCOBY that turns the sugar into bacteria are yeast-based. What you’re going to have in your final product of kombucha is a bunch of beneficial bacteria that are yeast-based. These are yeast driven microbes, even though the yeast in the SCOBY and your kombucha are beneficial, if you have an overgrowth of yeast in your body, drinking kombucha may make these situations worse.

I want to emphasize that our gut microbiomes are designed to be diverse landscapes, teaming with different strains of beneficial bacteria, including yeast. For example, Candida is a beneficial yeast to have in the gut microbiome, however, the issue starts when this Candida growth gets out of control. Once your body starts to allow elevated levels it is considered to be Candida overgrowth. Due to our modern diets, millions today struggle with Candida overgrowth, most people don’t even know it. The same is true for other forms of bacteria, we know they have the potential to cause a diseased state and acute condition that develops to a chronic condition in the body.

Hi, I am Heathar

With over 12 years experience as an alternative healer, integrative health coach and one who has been through severe physical injury trying every remedy under the sun to heal myself with no avail…I’m here to tell you, all of those things are not only attainable but are foundational to achieving optimal health and are core elements to overcoming all chronic and stubborn diseases.

At the age of 23 I suffered a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) preventing me from the ability to engage in physical activity for over 12 years post my car accident. Today, I know I could have recovered from this injury much quicker if I had known then what I know now! But….the accident lead me down the healing path. A path that I was destined to take to help myself heal and to learn how to help others heal complicated and chronic disorders as well.

During this time, I learned two things: How to harness the healing power of sunlight and how to utilize frequency based medicine to facilitate biological transformations in the body - all the way down to the mitochondrial level.

Today, I lead an active life and you can bet I’m uber passionate about teaching others how they can overcome even the most daunting health experiences that most medical professionals have band-aid solutions for, at best.

Sunburst

And today, my health continues to improve each day and I now lead an active, healthy lifestyle - all of which I thought would never be possible to achieve again. All it took was discovering the most effective path to health and healing to get me there and now, to help my clients get there as well!

Kombucha Health Benefits

Kombucha Health Benefits, Point #4: If we drink a lot of kombucha or focus on only one or two primary fermented foods, we can cause an imbalance in our gut microbiome.

It’s really important to understand that the gut microbiome is meant to be a diverse environment with a lot of different beneficial bacteria occupying your gut. All of these bacteria work together and feed off one another. If we do something like drink a lot of kombucha or focus on only one or two primary fermented foods, we can cause an imbalance in our gut microbiome. This is because the bacteria in those foods or beverages will grow more. You are encouraging that bacteria to form in your gut, those levels will increase which decreases levels of other microbes.

This can create an imbalance situation, I know a lot of us are told to eat fermented foods, drink your probiotics, take your probiotics, however, the gut microbiome is a delicate area. It’s a sensitive area and you don’t want to be dumping these probiotics into your body without knowing if your gut microbiome needs that strain. One way I help people establish what their gut microbiome looks like is by doing a DNA GI-MAP Stool Test. This will show what kind of pathogens are present in your gut as well as the levels of beneficial bacteria.

The Bottom Line of Kombucha Health Benefits: Examining the Facts

I hope this episode about gut health and fermented drinks such as kombucha brings you a lot of knowledge on what to consider and look for when it comes to the health benefits and potential issues that may arise in your gut microbiome. I know when I stopped drinking kombucha and swapped it for the Sunlight Rx and metabolic reset diet, my gut health improved exponentially.
